The poem was published in the October 1997 issue of the Hatboro-Horsham High School student newspaper, The Hat Chat.
A revised version of the poem, titled "Image in a Dream," was included in Fuchs' debut novel, The Danger of Being Me. A further-revised version of the poem, titled "Fleeting Image," was submitted to the Orchards Poetry Journal in April of 2020.
Are you a passing image in a dream?
With gleaming golden hair and lilac lips.
Are love and these emotions all they seem?
For if they aren't, I have to come to grips
With losing you, the goddess of my heart,
whose residence is vacant to this day.
I always hoped we'd never have to part,
But just as you appeared, you went away.
I called your name, but no reply you gave.
I searched the darkness for your trace but none
was there for me to find, for me to save.
Your transitory stay with me was done.
When first, my dear, you left me, it may seem
That you were but an image in a dream.
