"One study indicated that the military recruits at low-income schools up to ten times more frequently than at higher-income schools, though more likely for the purpose of targeting those at an economic disadvantage with the correlated increase in the recruitment of candidates with mental health difficulties being more of a coincidental second-order effect. But the really insidious scenario here is that if such a recruit is instructed to lie, and does, and successfully enlists under those conditions, and that recruit's mental health difficulties are later exacerbated to the point that they become too overwhelming for them to bear, that recruit can be discharged for fraudulent enlistment and lose all of the benefits that were used to convince them to enlist in the first place."
