Summary[]

A year after surviving a daemonic confrontation in the city of Torris, Leander Brightwise finds himself in the company of the Aaracokras Sykaar and Ryn, the Aasimar Samurai Masa Mune, and the Cleric Mal, who accept a job to investigate reports of necromantic activity in the town of Hartsfield. Navigating a vineyard surrounding the town, the party is approached by a horde of zombies that appear to be the undead remnants of the former townspeople; they cut down the zombies with little trouble as Leander's clockwork hummingbird Buzz provides invaluable support, and the group makes their way to a winery at the entrance of town, finding several casks of wine and a chest containing two vials of acid, two potions of haste, four potions of healing (which Leander promptly fumbles down to three), and three vials of an unknown black liquid.

Leander casts Invisibility on himself while Sykaar and Ryn fly overhead; Masa and Mal proceed on foot, and the party enters the town, where they confront a dozen zombies and necromancers. They battle against the spellcasters and undead, taking significant damage: Sykaar is knocked unconscious by an Ice Storm before Leander barely manages to pull her free and Mel administers Lay on Hands, and Ryn is grappled by Bigby's Hand before eventually breaking free. Sykaar and Ryn both deliver aerial acid attacks, Masa unleashes his Necrotic Shroud, and Mal channels divinity to Turn Undead before summoning a spiritual weapon, while Leander picks off necromancers with his infused crossbow.

After clearing the town center, Sykaar and Ryn fly the party up to a rooftop to recuperate, until they spot an undead ogre; following it cautiously, they make their way to a clearing just outside of town where they encounter a necromancer who further leads them to the entrance to an underground temple. After some consideration, they decide to follow again, and are led to a chamber deep underground where they confront a desiccated lich using a crystal ball to observe all that has transpired. The man demands to know why the party has attacked his town, claiming that his people had been devastated by a plague that killed most of the farmworkers, causing a food shortage that led to widespread starvation.

When the townspeople begged him for help, the man reluctantly agreed to raise the dead as zombies to work the fields and provide for the living; in order to help him do so, his granddaughter Anila allowed herself to be sacrificed so that her heart could be made into a phylactery, enabling the man to become a lich. Far beyond exhausted by the effort of maintaining his necromantic spells, Ardalan willingly offers to give the group his phylactery in exchange for their promise that they will do no harm to the remaining living townspeople; after some deliberation, Masa takes the container and the lich gives Leander permission to take the crystal ball.

The party leaves the temple and passes back through the town, returning to the winery near the entrance to the town, where they discover a portrait depicting an older man, his adult daughter, and a young girl, alive in the days before the plague. The group laments the dead as Melanalin casts Dispel Magic on the phylactery in order to allow the souls of the undead townspeople to peacefully move on to the afterlife. The heart dissolves into dust inside the cube, and the party buries the container in the vineyard, marking the location with the portrait of Ardilan and Anila.
