I've yet to comprehend this foreign drive
to write and set down words unceasingly,
to rhythms fabricate and rhymes contrive,
producing lyric prose increasingly;
this hypermanic urge to generate
short stories, novels, poems, teleplays,
to learn new ways to say old things, create
a way to pass the hours of my days;
this abstract impulse to set down in verse
the random thought and feeling that impels
my pen to frantic flights, as I traverse
sestinas, rondeaus, sonnets, villanelles;
this senseless waking dream within a dream
has only now to find a fitting theme.
